About this game

It was one of the first big games I worked on when I arrived at Hilarious. At the time there wasn’t any streamlined development process, each game was started from scratch and we still relied on jQuery for a lot of interactions (which I did my best to remove quickly over later game developments).

The whole game, except the UI, is actually one huge SVG where I animated all the elements and made a system to zoom and pan the SVG with camera-like controls.

I also added a threshold to the power bar to allow players to succeed the jump when it was actually failed by a few pixels. This reduced frustration while increasing the chances of a close win scenario, which boosts player satisfaction.

It may not look like it but the characters are in threejs.

Our games were primarily played on low-to-medium-end smartphones, so performances of were critical. Since CSS 3D transforms are not efficient I had to use threejs to create a realistic perspective matching the 2D background. This is the result of several hours of carefully setting up the camera position and fov as well as the characters movements and speed, which can change depending the screen size you’re playing on.

And the animations themselves are 2D sprites generated from pre-rendered 3D animations.
